District 1 Update October 21, 2007
Hello All,

Just a quick email to update everyone on District happenings.............

First off, let me thank all of you that attended the District 1 Coaches and Directors Fall Seminar on
September 30th. The turnout was fantastic (141 pre-registered / 127 in attendance) and I received close
to 30 seminar feedback forms back with great comments, constructive criticism and suggestions for
future seminars. The wheels are in motion with ideas for next year. I appreciate everyone's support in my
first run through.

The District 1 Managers and Operators Fall Seminar was held last Tuesday, October 16th in conjunction
with ISI District 3 / Metropolitan Ice Rink Manager's Association (MIRMA). We had a great turnout as well
with over 80 total in attendance and 32 of those from District 1. The agenda was interesting and
informative followed by a mini-trade show and tour of the Danbury Ice Arena.

The Northeast Ice Skating Manager's Association (NEISMA) held one of five regional Fall Meetings at
Nashoba Valley Olympia on the following day with a good turnout and equally informative agenda. The
meeting was followed by a BBQ so all that attended went home happy! ISI is looking forward to
collaborating with NEISMA at their Spring Conference and Trade Show in May 2008 by offering Ice Arena
Institute of Management (IAIM) educational seminars as part of the event. The District will also have a
booth at the trade show.

Now that I have returned to my desk, I was able to update emails from the Fall Seminar registration. I
wanted to be sure we had an up-to-date list to remind everyone of an upcoming District events and news:

JUDGING SEMINAR

District 1 is sponsoring a Judge's Seminar on Monday, November 12th from 8am - noon. This is the
observed Veteran's Day. The seminar is being held at the Charles Moore Arena in Orleans, MA hosted by
Joyce Hussey. This is a great opportunity to build confidence in your personal judging. The seminar is
scheduled to be both off ice and on ice with demonstrators and trial judging action. There is a small fee
of $10.00 per person BUT we include lunch..........and if the weather keeps up, you can hit the beach in
the afternoon! We currently have over (10) people registered so the event will definitely happen. Don't
hesitate.......register today by completing the Judge's Seminar application and mailing it in or fax it to me
at (781) 826-3089 or email me at smccoy@fmcarenas.com.

DISTRICT CHAMPS

Donna Rozon, Rob McBride and I had the opportunity to meet with Patti Kennedy, Barbara Allinson and
Lynne Quinn from Nashoba Valley Olympia this past week to discuss District Champs 2008 being
hosted there in June. The group is way ahead of the curve with planning and have already established
many volunteer committees as well as analyzed logistics, reviewed the District Champs packet and
offered ideas on how to make the event more memorable. We agreed on some necessary changes to
the packet which Donna is editing and will have ready for final proof by the end of October. I spoke with
some of you at District Champs 2007 about ways to improve the event going forward but I would like to
hear more input. What works? What doesn't? We need to hear the good, bad and ugly to ensure we have
all our bases covered. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Donna with input or to volunteer your
services to review the final draft version of the District Champs packet.

OPEN COMPETITION DATE

With Nashoba Valley Olympia being the successful bidder for District Champs 2008, they will be giving
up their competition date for 2008 only. Their competition was slated to be Friday & Saturday, April 18th &
19th. I would like to open this date up to all administrative members who would like to host a competition
on this weekend. Please email me no later than November 1st if you would like to be considered. Please
remember, this date will go back to Nashoba Valley Olympia in 2009.

BOARD MEETING

I will be attending the ISI Board of Directors meeting on November 9th -11th. Please contact me by
November 1st if you would like anything specific reported to the Board or brought up for discussion.

WESKATE SEMINAR

In lieu of a formal Spring meeting, I thought the District should consider hosting a weSKATE seminar.
Before I contact the ISI office, I would like to see how many people would express interest. The seminar
will probably be a weekday and I hope to run it in conjunction with the Manager's and Operator's meeting
I am planning for March 2008. If you are interested in attending a weSKATE seminar, please email me
no later than November 15th expressing your interest and if you are an administrative member /
director........how many instructors you could bring with you.

HIGH LEVEL TEST SESSION

There are two high level test sessions scheduled in the next month:

October 28, 2007.
I will be offering a session as part of Thanksgiving on Ice at Navin Rink on Saturday, November 17, 2007.
Please register directly with Katy for her session and directly with me for the session on November 17th.
